Job Alerts and Email Communications Policy
This policy explains how SpellJob's job alerts and other emails work, in line with UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). The ICO publishes guidance on electronic marketing.
Job alert emails
- Opt-in only. You choose to create an alert and tick a box to receive emails. The box is never pre-ticked.
- Starts straight away. Your alert is active as soon as you create it. We send one email to confirm it has been set up, with a link to change or stop it – so if someone else used your address, you can unsubscribe in one click.
- Frequency. Daily or weekly, as you choose. We only send an email when there are new matching jobs.
- Content. Jobs matching your criteria from our job sources and SpellJob employers. Sample or test data is never sent.
What we store
To send future alerts we must keep your email address, your criteria (keywords, country, location, category, job type, work arrangement), the frequency, the status of the alert and the date we last emailed you. When you create an alert, a copy of its set-up and your email address (plus any first name you give) is also emailed to the SpellJob team. The first name is not stored in the alert itself.
Changing or stopping alerts
Every alert email contains a link to manage it, where you can change the frequency, pause, resume or unsubscribe. Unsubscribing deletes the alert and the email address stored with it. Signed-in candidates can also manage alerts from their dashboard. You do not need to sign in to unsubscribe.
Service emails
If you have an account we send essential messages about it – password resets, security notices (such as a password change), listing review outcomes for employers, and account deletion confirmation. These are not marketing, and you cannot opt out of them while you have an account. Password-reset links are only ever sent to your own email address.
Marketing
SpellJob does not currently send marketing emails. If we do in future, we will ask for your separate consent and include an unsubscribe link in every message. Creating an account, uploading a CV or setting up a job alert does not count as consent to marketing.
Email delivery
Emails are sent through our email service provider. We record whether each email was sent or failed, without recording its content.
